Can I shut down my boiler for the summer?
The answer: It depends on your boiler.
• Yes, turn it off if your boiler uses a pilot light. The pilot light will burn up gas in warm weather, an unneeded expense.
• Modern boilers, on the other hand, often provide a “standby”option that cuts down on the gas but lets the system be easily reactivated.
• Yes, keep the boiler running if your water heater relies on it for heat. Otherwise you won’t have hot water for showers etc.
A word of caution
Every boiler needs to run for a few minutes every 3-4 weeks during the summer. This will prevent the boiler from seizing up due to inactivity.
