New York winters can be especially bracing, so you certainly don’t want your furnace to conk out between November and March.
These tips are good to follow if you’re preparing your furnace for the winter, and they’re also valuable if your system stops working and you are trouble-shooting:
Breakers, switches
See if any fuses are blown or the power switch is off instead of on.
Thermostat
We’re not condescending when we ask you if the thermostat is on and set for heat. Stuff happens and an amazing number of thermostats unwittingly get turned off or set incorrectly.
Filter
Is the filter clogged, which will slow or prevent the system’s operations?
Vents, ducts
If they accumulate enough dirt they can shut down or hamper a furnace’s operation. Like filters, they need to be cleaned periodically to maintain good air quality and enable smooth functioning of the furnace.
Ignition
Check the ignition system or pilot light to make sure it is working.
