A ceiling fan is a big aid to your heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system. It adjusts the temperature and cuts into your energy bill.
It adds coolness in the summer, warmth in the winter – and at a fraction of the cost of central HVAC.
“In summer, a counterclockwise fan rotation makes you feel cooler. It can lower the room temperature by up to 4 degrees. This works by drying sweat off your skin, giving you a nice cooling feeling. During winter, a clockwise rotation pushes warm air down. It spreads the warmth throughout the room, cutting down on heating costs,” says Consumer Reports.
The savings add up as the fan helps lower or raise the temperature to your desired level, which in turn reduces demand on the HVAC system.
“Fans save energy,” says Consumer Reports, which studies fans, air-conditioners and other HVAC equipment.
“According to Energy Star, you can save 3 to 5 percent on air-conditioning costs for each degree you raise your thermostat on a hot summer’s day. Using a ceiling fan (which costs much less to run) can make you feel up to 4° F cooler, enabling you to set your thermostat a bit higher and still keep comfortable.”
And it doesn’t have to be a ceiling fan. You can use a moveable fan to accomplish similar results.
