Virtually every air conditioning system “sweats” a little, creating condensation on the ducts as it cools your home or business. That’s normal, nothing to worry about.
However, if the condensation is becoming noticeably worse, you may have a problem.
• The air filter may be dirty and need cleaning or replacing.
• You may have too much humidity inside your building.
• The airflow could be restricted, forcing the system to labor harder.
• The attic may be too warm.
• Insulation could be damaged, meaning it provides inadequate coverage.
Bad results
None of these problems require major fixes, but you need to take action before things snowball.
For instance, if the condensation keeps dripping in large amounts it can find its way into your insulation. Wet insulation is useless; you will have to buy and install new insulation.
The unwanted condensation also can rot drywall and create pools that draw mildew and bacteria.
Solutions
These problems are more common in older homes that lacked attic vents, which keep ducts dryer by lessening the amount of moist air.
• Older buildings often lack insulation on the ducts. Installing a layer of insulation will reduce condensation.
• Insulating the attic will not only reduce condensation but it also will help cut your energy bill.
• Because excessive humidity can lead to too much condensation, you may want to buy a humidifier, which captures moisture that is in the air.
• Have your ducts cleaned every few years or more often. A professional cleaning will improve airflow by removing dust, debris and bacteria and eliminating places where moisture can settle.
