If you’re a New Yorker you don’t need your cousin from Boston to tell you to get your furnace ready before winter arrives.
The process isn’t all that complicated, and it does get your heating system primed for another winter without a New York team in the Super Bowl.
What to do
The checklist starts with making sure the thermostat works properly, the filters are clean and connections are secure.
Then the tasks get more complicated, but they’re very necessary to maximize the odds of enjoying a breakdown-free winter.
• The heat exchanger needs to be cleaned and checked for cracks. At least once a year!
• Your system’s blower motor will need cleaning and maybe lubricating. (The furnace’s manual has instructions.)
• Other things that require testing and possible adjusting: the ignition switch, the carbon monoxide detector, vents.
Again, don’t wait until the dead of winter to get your furnace ready for winter.
Better yet, treat yourself to an in-depth maintenance check now by a furnace professional. Then you can focus all your energy on determining what’s wrong with New York football teams.
