How heavy rain affects your HVAC

We all know that April showers bring May flowers, but does rain hurt your heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system?

Almost always no, but very occasionally yes.

Even a deluge should not harm your outside unit. It’s sturdy and corrosion-proof, and it’s on a concrete pad elevated above the ground. The only problem could come if a tree falls on it or if the land is sloped and rainwater somehow finds its way into the unit. Even then the unit, which contains the condenser and the compressor, usually is built to repel water.

Tarp Trap

Your unit does not need a tarp to ward off the rain. The tarp actually can cause problems by trapping water and air around the unit. Remove the tarp before rain or snow fall so it doesn’t keep precipitation on the unit.
