HVAC vents dripping? Here’s why

If water is dripping from your home’s inside vents, you could have any one of a number of problems.

They range from the routine to the bizarre. It could simply be a dirty filter. Or it could be a non-HVAC problem, such as a leak in your attic or roof that is trickling down to the vents.

First stop: Check the filter to see if it needs cleaning or replacement.

A dirty filter will block the airflow and keep the condensation from reaching the drip pan. Eventually that condensation can grow into water that is dripping from the vents. Now you have a bigger problem: the drip is slowing down the system, putting water on your floor, and giving a habitat to bacteria and mold.

The moral of the story? Clean or replace your filters whenever they get dirty.

Other reasons

• You have a drip pan that captures the condensation/water and ferries it outside. These pans can rust and sprout holes, spreading water into the vents.

• The condensate pump could be broken. This pump captures condensation and water from the air conditioner and then sends it outside. Condensate pumps last between five and 15 years, so failures do happen.

• A related component is the condensate line, which is vulnerable to clogs. Algae, mildew and other debris can accumulate unless you periodically flush the line with vinegar to prevent buildup.

Whatever the cause, take action or call a reliable HVAC technician before the dripping increases and the system struggles more.
