Here’s another reason to make sure you have an effective filter for your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system:
Microplastics.
Researchers have begun raising concern about microplastics, tiny items spun loose from textiles and other materials. They measure no more than 5 millimeters in size; that’s about the thickness of a U.S. penny.
These miniscule plastics are suspected of adding to pollution both indoors and outside.
A good HVAC filter will catch them, but it needs to be cleaned or replaced every 30-42 days. Otherwise they may escape back into the air where people can unwittingly inhale them, authorities say.
Microplastics
In homes the most common types of airborne microplastics come from synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon used in clothing.
Vehicle tires and urban dust are two other leading causes of microplastic, according to HORIBA, a Japanese firm that analyzes plastics and their impact.
