Programs save you money on new HVAC

The program applies to not just heat pumps but also  heat-pump clothes dryers, induction ranges, new insulation, and even some electrical upgrades.

The details

New York was a leader in applying for the federally funded program, part of the Inflation Reduction Act. The home energy rebates involve two programs: Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) and Home Efficiency Rebates (HER).

You may be eligible for one or both.

• HEAR rebates are aimed at households with low and moderate incomes. They can be used to help pay for the purchase and installation of certain Energy Star-certified electrical equipment, such as heat pumps and heat-pump water heaters.

It offers a rebate of up to $8,000 for a heat pump to people whose income is 80 percent or less of the media income in their area.

Smaller rebates – up to $4,000, would be available to moderate-income homes. That is defined as between 80 percent and 150 percent of the median income.

• HER rebates are available to households of all income levels, but the energy savings must be measured. The rebate will be based on the energy savings.

Income perspective

Don’t automatically be deterred by the limits on income in your general neighborhood.

For example, the median income in San Francisco, California, is over $136,000, so a household there with a $200,000 annual income may still be in the moderate category. And as any New Yorker knows, San Francisco ain’t got nothin’ on us!
