Are you living in a typical smallish New York City condo or home and eager to find a heating system that saves energy and space?
The combi boiler may be your solution. This gas boiler provides both hot water and central heating; it’s ideal for a home with relatively little demand for heated water – a single bathroom condo, for instance. And it takes up very little space; you can stash it in a cupboard!
If multiple people want to take showers in multiple bathrooms at the same time, the combi is not for you. But it could fill your need nicely if you use hot water in only one tap at a time.
The combi – short for combination – relies on condensing technology to heat the water in the system by extracting latent heat from the flue gasses.
Small, smart
The combi has size on its side. The typical combi is small enough to fit in a cabinet or cupboard since it needs no external storage tank, which is mandatory for a conventional system.
A combi often is less expensive to buy and install than a conventional system, and it’s energy-smart, with a burning efficiency of 90 percent or more.
It’s also quick to heat the water and keep it hot as long as you want.
How it works
With a combi boiler, a gas burner is ignited when you request hot water or heat. Then the hot water is directed to either your faucets or your radiator. Many models also store some water inside the boiler, making it accessible virtually on demand.
You save money because you don’t have to store hot water all day. You heat it when you need it. The combi’s stainless steel direct heat exchanger promptly transfers heat to create hot water very quickly. And since you are free of a storage tank, you can enjoy an unlimited supply of hot water.
