Commercial AC won’t work? Tips to fix it

Commercial AC systems are much bigger and more complicated than residential AC, but their troubles tend to start in the same areas.

So if the AC at your commercial building won’t work, think back to the steps you take when the AC at home misbehaves. The first few steps aren’t as condescending as you might think; they just reflect the fact that stuff happens and cooler heads can prevail – without a service call.

First, check the power supply. Maybe a circuit breaker tripped or the power cord is damaged.

Then go through your basic checklist:

• Is the thermostat set correctly and are the batteries OK?

• Are the air filters clean?

• Is something blocking the vents?

• Is something blocking the condensate drain? Dirt and debris can accumulate, causing the system to slow and eventually stop.

If you see no problems in these areas, you may want to consult a technician experienced in heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

That’s because we’re suggesting you now look at more complicated areas.

• Are there loose or burnt wires among the components or the circuit board?

• Is the refrigerant at the proper level and not leaking? You definitely need an experienced tech for the refrigerant, which is toxic and can cause a multitude of health problems if not handled correctly.

If none of these usual suspects prove to be the culprit, the technician must expand his search and find the cause of your AC shutdown.
